![]() Use water or compressed air to blow them off of there and take caution not to damage any radiator fins. You mentioned this, but check your front intake screen for bugs and check the radiator for bugs aloso. If the coolant is just overheating and some was bubbling out, then there could be a thermostat/fan issue. The manual says you fill the reservoir to the "F" (full) line, and the factory shipped mixture is 50/50. You said you worked on the bike while really hot.Ĥ. When working on filling the cooling system, the bike is supposed to be cold, not hot. If the reservoir is bone dry, you have a leak in the system.ģ. If you just have excess coming out of the overflow tube, then you had too much coolant in the system.Ģ. If you've got bug guts that are embedded in the clear coat it's possible there's stuff restricting airflow across the radiator as well.ġ. The other thing to check is to see if aiflow is getting through the radiator fins. It could be a stuck thermostat or bad fan switch not allowing the fan to come on at all or not early enough to cool the engine down. It may be that your bike is more susceptible to the heat and this is the result. Then do a test run and see if you can duplicate the symptoms you've been seeing. I'd start by making sure the cooling system is completely full (not overfull). Filling the reservoir to the top results in coolant being forced out of the tank as the temperature increases and expansion occurs. Why did you fill the coolant reservoir to the top? If you were concerned about the rest of the cooling system being low you should add coolant to the radiator rather than filling the reservoir to the top. Should I be worried? Should I go back to the shop? Or should I just chalk it up to the hot weather since the bike still cools ok (never hit either red line on my temp gauge)?īy changing from a 50/50 to a 70/30 mixture you've increased the boiling point by about 10F. The bike also had caked on bugs that to this day I havent been able to get all of them off (thats why i was getting a detail estimate). I know the guy before probably didnt take too good of care of the bike because he told me he was going to ride the bike all season on it rear tire that was down to the thread in the middle. I also made a 70/30 mix rather than the 50/50 thinking that the boiling point may have been too low. It made a similar pattern so I am figuring it is just the overflow, but want to make sure. I knew it would leak because I filled it completely to the top. So went and mixed some new coolant and made sure to get the bike really hot (the first time it happened it was about 95+ degrees and today it was hot and the guy at the shop heated my bike up to burn off the oil that dripped onto the header during the oil change). It was in the same spot and my reservoir was completely empty. I didn't worry about it until after getting my oil changed today, I got ready to go to work and there was coolant all over my driveway. ![]() Nothing seemed to be leaking bad and it looked to be from the overflow hose near my shift linkage. ![]() As I walked out to the bike I noticed fresh coolant underneath it. About two weeks ago I went to get an estimate to get my bike (99 Zx9r) detailed. ![]() Well after searching I didnt find any topics that have to do with this exact problem.
